Driving scale and innovation with Lead Engineer, Cameron Thomas

In this edition of our Q&A series, we speak with Cameron Thomas, Lead Engineer at Send, about his role in shaping the platform, supporting a growing engineering team, and helping the business scale. Cameron shares insights from his three years at Send, from navigating rapid growth to building impactful products and preparing for what’s next.

How would you describe your role as Lead Engineer at Send?

It’s a busy role, especially at this stage of Send’s growth. A lot of my time is spent balancing priorities, supporting our existing customers while also driving forward innovation and new initiatives.

I focus on helping the team stay aligned and productive, while also looking at how we scale effectively. That includes improving quality, refining processes, and evolving the product as we grow. No two days are the same, but it’s all about finding that balance between stability and progress.

What attracted you to Send?

I saw strong parallels with a previous role I really enjoyed. Send was at a similar stage in its journey, that exciting early growth phase where every decision and initiative can have a meaningful impact. It’s the kind of environment where you can really see the direct results of your work, which is incredibly motivating.

I’ve always found that type of environment rewarding because you’re not constrained by rigid layers of process. Instead, you have the freedom to experiment, explore new solutions, and tackle complex, interesting challenges. It’s a place where creativity and initiative are valued, and where you can contribute in ways that genuinely shape the company’s trajectory. Being part of that growth, helping to build something from its early stages, and seeing it evolve has been a fulfilling aspect of my career.

How has Send evolved since you joined?

The most noticeable change over my time at Send has been scale. The team has roughly doubled in size, and our customer base has grown significantly, which has naturally brought new challenges and opportunities. With more people and more customers, the way we build, operate, and collaborate has evolved.

In the early days, everyone wore multiple hats, roles were fluid, and the pace was fast. As we’ve grown, processes and teams are more structured. That structure has been crucial in helping us stay focused on what matters most, maintain quality, and continue delivering results efficiently. Growth has allowed us to scale our impact without losing agility, and it’s been rewarding to see how the team has adapted and matured along with the company.

How do you maintain communication across a growing team?

As our team continues to grow, we’re excited about the opportunities it brings to collaborate and share knowledge in new ways. One approach we’ve been investing in is creating structured knowledge-sharing initiatives, things like internal workshops.

These sessions are a fantastic way for engineers to connect across teams, exchange ideas, and stay informed about work happening beyond their immediate focus. They not only help everyone stay aligned but also spark creativity and innovation. Even in a remote environment, these initiatives create meaningful opportunities for collaboration and strengthen the sense of community within the team.

What sets Send apart from others in the industry?

One of the things that really sets Send apart is our breadth of capability. We take a broader, more holistic approach. We look at the entire underwriting workflow and aim to orchestrate the full picture, ensuring all the pieces work seamlessly together.

At the same time, we offer the flexibility to support the different approaches and needs of our customers. That combination of comprehensive coverage and adaptability is a real strength for us, and it’s something that allows Send to deliver real value across the board.

Is there a project you’re particularly proud of?

One of the most rewarding projects was working on the next version of our dashboard and search functionality.

It’s the first thing users see and where they spend a lot of their time, so it was important to get it right. We moved from something quite ad hoc in the early days to a much more considered, well-designed experience.

It involved a lot of planning, both from a design and engineering perspective, especially around handling large amounts of data and ensuring performance. It’s been great to see it come together and reach the point where it’s ready for wider use.

What key lessons have you learned during your time at Send?

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is the power of being intentional in what we build. While our flexibility is a huge strength, focusing our efforts allows us to deliver real impact where it matters most.

By making thoughtful decisions and prioritising the areas that will bring the greatest value, we’re able to create products that truly serve our customers’ needs. It’s about being purposeful, not spreading ourselves too thin, and ensuring every choice we make strengthens the overall experience. This approach allows us to be both versatile and highly effective, delivering solutions that really make a difference.

How has your role evolved over time?

I started at Send as a Senior Front-End Engineer, focused primarily on building features and resolving issues. Over time, my role has evolved into Lead Engineer, which is much more centred around leadership and supporting the team. I now manage a talented group of engineers and help shape front-end strategy and architectural decisions, ensuring our work aligns with both technical goals and user needs.

A large part of my role is mentoring and supporting others, helping team members navigate the codebase and make informed decisions. While I’m less focused on individual delivery than I once was, it’s incredibly rewarding to enable the wider team to succeed, see projects come together, and watch the impact of our work scale across the company. Being able to guide and empower others while still staying connected to the technical side of things makes this role fulfilling.

What excites you most about Send’s future?

There’s a lot to be excited about as we look to the future. Right now, our focus is on scaling, making sure everything we build is capable of supporting a growing customer base. It’s an exciting project that will allow us to have an even greater impact.

AI has always been at the heart of our platform. We're now exploring new opportunities around Agentic AI, which opens up a whole new dimension for the product and the ways we can deliver value to our customers. From a front-end perspective, I’m especially looking forward to continuing to refine the user experience, creating something that is not only intuitive and efficient but also truly recognisable as the Send experience.

What advice would you give to engineers considering joining Send?

Push yourself out of your comfort zone and take initiative.

At a company like Send, there’s a huge opportunity to get involved in different areas and make a real impact. Whether it’s contributing to engineering projects or improving internal processes, those who step forward and take ownership will gain the most.

It’s a great environment for growth, not just as an engineer, but overall.
